Week 1: Safe Homes, Strong Communities

May is Building Safety Month, and this year’s first-week theme, “Safe Homes, Strong Communities,” is an important reminder that safe neighborhoods begin with safe homes. Every homeowner can take simple steps to protect their family, property, and community.

One of the most important things residents can do is understand that building codes exist to keep homes safe, healthy, and structurally sound. Codes help ensure that construction work is completed properly and that electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems operate safely.

Before starting a project, homeowners should know that many types of work require permits. Depending on the project, this may include building, grading, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing permits. Room additions, garage conversions, remodeling projects, retaining walls, re-roofing, water heater replacements, HVAC installations, and electrical upgrades are common examples where permits will be required.

Hiring qualified licensed professionals is strongly recommended when planning alterations, additions, or conversions. Experienced contractors and design professionals can help homeowners navigate the permit process and ensure work meets safety standards.

Routine maintenance is equally important. Homeowners should regularly test and maintain smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, pool safety barriers and gates, handrails, balconies and other safety features. Replacing batteries, checking alarms, and addressing small repairs early can prevent larger problems later.

The City of Glendale is committed to helping residents build and maintain safe homes. For more information, please visit the Community Development Department website, GlendalePermits.org, stop by the Building Safety counter, or call (818) 548-3200 for assistance.

Safe homes create strong communities, and together we can continue making Glendale a safer place for everyone.
